Is Your DOT Number at Risk? The Importance of Updating MCS-150 on Time

At MS SAFETY PARTNERS, we work daily with trucking companies across the U.S., and one of the most common — and avoidable — issues we see is the failure to update the MCS-150 form on time. It may seem like a small detail, but missing or outdated MCS-150 filings can lead to big problems, including the deactivation of your DOT number.
If you're operating under an active DOT number, this update is not optional. It's a vital part of your safety compliance, and in this blog post, we’ll explain why it matters, how to stay ahead, and what steps to take if you're overdue.
What is the MCS-150?
The MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) is a form required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This form collects essential information about your company, including:
Company name, address, and contact details
Number of drivers and power units
Operating classification (Interstate or Intrastate)
Type of cargo you haul
Safety and compliance information
Mileage and vehicle count from the previous year

When Does It Need to Be Updated?
The FMCSA requires every motor carrier to update their MCS-150 at least once every 24 months, even if nothing has changed in your business. The deadline is based on your DOT number — specifically, the last two digits.
For example: If your DOT number ends in 67, your update is due in July of every odd-numbered year.
What Happens If You Don’t File on Time?
Failing to update your MCS-150 can result in:
Inactive DOT status
Deactivation of your operating authority
Fines or penalties if you continue to operate
Loads being canceled by brokers or shippers
A flag on your FMCSA compliance record
Even if you’re still running safely, these red flags can lead to delays in getting loads, insurance renewals, and compliance audits.
How to File Your MCS-150
There are two ways to file:
1. Online Filing (fastest)
Go to the FMCSA website and log into your account. Use your DOT PIN to complete and submit the form.
2. Mail or Fax (slow and not recommended)
You can print the form and mail or fax it, but this may take several weeks to process.
Make sure the information is accurate, especially your vehicle count, mileage, and carrier classification.
